Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

I have seperated from my husband and we have 2 daughters together (4 years and 5 months). I moved at September 4th, 2011, since then he hasnt paid any child support, I have still let him have the girls every other weekend (on his weekends he asks for money for groceries, for me to supply all clothes, bottles, diapers, wipes, formula, rice cereal, etc.) Two weeks ago he pocket dialed my mother leaving a very clear voicemail, in the voicemail he is cursing continuously and tells my 4 year old that if she didnt lay down and watch cartoons he was going to stab her in the throat with a fork. I have cut off communication with him completely, not knowing what to do. I have an appointment monday with an attorney but this weekend would be his weekend and I do not feel like my daughters are safe with him. Is it illegal to tell him no he cannot have them for the weekend? We currently do not have any agreement (besides verbal) that he has every other weekend visitation and nothing filed in the courts. Please advise
