Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

I have a son with another guy. He has not been around since about 6 months after my son was born. He is now 5 years old. He doesn't help or see him. I'd like to get his name off of his birth certificate and put my husband's name on it. Would he have to be present for my husband to adopt and have his name put on the certificate? I do not know where he lives; I have no contact information what so ever on the biological father.
