Legal Question in Civil Litigation in South Carolina

defamation of character

years ago my wife did something against the law. she paid for her mistake. we were very careful to keep this a secret. but now someone who dosen't like my wife has found out about what is in her past and is threating to tell others about my wifes past. is there anything i can do legally to stop this person from opening old wounds? she has no reason to tell others about my wife past. she is doing it just to hurt my wife. this person is constantly causing my wife trouble can you help get this woman out of my familys life? this is just a small part of the things this woman is doing.

Re: defamation of character

Although this woman doesn't appear to have done anything wrong legally, you could send her a letter advising her that under certain laws she may want to consider leaving your wife alone. Sometimes lawyers warn people in writing that if they do certain things that it could be considered Defamation or Harassment. This doesn't guarantee anything but its possible that it might get her attention. The letter really should come from an attorney as it will have more effect and that way you can make sure that the letter itself is legally proper. Good luck.
