Legal Question in Civil Litigation in South Carolina

I made an agreement to buy a car from a coworker. He said there was something wrong with it,and to take home and try to fix it and we would worry about payment later.I brought it home and i am in the process of fixing it.today i get a call from his father who says the car is his and he wants the car or the money. He wants $500 more than the agreed upon amount.I told him i didn't have the money for the car and we would make plans for him to pick up the car.I did about $1500 worth of work on the car and doubt very seriously I'll be able to get my time and my money back. What would be my legal position on this?

I'm sorry for your troubles. That is a terrible situation. To try and narrow this down for you, here is where you stand. First of all, you did nothing wrong. Secondly, the father did nothing wrong. So the person who did do something wrong is the co-worker who told you he owned the car. My guess is that it is possible that the co-worker may have committed some sort of fraud, or attempted fraud. You may want to consult with the police or the county solicitor's office. Its also possible that a civil suit could be brought against the co-worker, but that might take some research by an attorney to figure out how to proceed.

This is a rather unusal situation and I have never been asked about a situation quite like this before. My advise is to have a more detailed conversation with an attorney in your area who can ask you questions to get all of the necessary details to figure out the best course of action. Do not act on anything I have told you since I'm not sure that I have enough information to fully advise you. Try calling a couple lawyers and see if you can get a phone consultation or a meeting. I wish you the best.
