This is not a legal question, but he's in trouble and needs to think creatively, so I'll try to help here.

His doctor should be able to give him alternatives and he's going to have to find something that can pay to keep him alive. Alternative medicine, yoga...all sorts of alternative modalities that are known to help the body recuperate.

Talk to social services in your state and see what sort of relief they have and what it will take to get on disability [SSI/SSD].

I don't recommend any particular solution, but if he is in that serious a difficulty, he might inquire about drug trials. There might be a doctor out there that would love to have him as a patient, so they can investigate how to bring people back from the brink.

Definitely, get some help from non-profit agencies working with diabetes and testicular cancer. There are so many people facing what he is facing and the chance to network with others may do him a world of good, and help him find answers that aren't obvious.
