Legal Question in Immigration Law in South Carolina

What I will like to know os wheather I am legal or not. At this point, I am not sure if I have a green card or not. Because one person is telling me I'm out of status and the other is saying I've had a green card for at lease one year in nc. Even though my I-797 was approved can I go ahead and process the I-485? Also, as a beneficiary can I have access or how can I receive any documents with my name as the beneficiary? Thank you Mr. Brian for your imput.

Hello:

Having an approved I-797 does not indicate by itself you are a lawful permanent resident. I would need more information.
