Legal Question in Intellectual Property in South Carolina
Wrote Book About My Employer and Work Experience
I was a salesman for 1 year at a prominent new car dealer and wrote a non-fiction expose book about my experiences there, both about my co-workers and our customers. I just mailed in the copyright papers, but have not formally published it yet. I want to show it to my old boss, along with a short cover letter, to have him read it. Questions: Would he be able to sue me for slander? As an alternative, can I offer for sale the copyright to the book without criminal liabilities or implications such as extortion or blackmail, which it is not intended to be? Could this be a straight out business deal between the two parties?

Re: Wrote Book About My Employer and Work Experience
I would want to see the cover letter before answering. WHy would you be concerned about extortion or blackmail? Are you threatening to release the book unless you receive some $$ or other arrangement? Then yes, you could be liable.
If no misstatement of facts are in the book, you need not worry about slander, but every smart author has a legal advisor before releasing a "smear" or "tell all" book.
Just makes sense from a preventative standpoint.
