Legal Question in Real Estate Law in South Carolina

Real estate

I paid for real estate a year ago, the Sellers has refused to give me the deed. I didn't get a written contract, I trusted them, dumb I know. I have a lawyer taking them to court for fraud plus...

Now they expect me to pay the property taxes which are $1,000.00.

My question is should I pay taxes on the property they still own. My lawyer says I can get my money back but I can't request the land since I didn't have a contract. I do have receipt, copy of certified check.
