Roommate won't pay rent
My roommate moved out to go home. She told us that she would still pay rent, and she signed a year lease. No one else moved in or took over the lease. She is now refusing to pay eventhough she is still on the lease. She lives out of state and we do not want to go to her state for court. What can we do about the whole situation and what should we file.

If all this occurred in South Carolina, you can file an action against her in Magistrate's Court in South Carolina. If you prevail and get a judgment against her, it may be picked up by one of the Credit Reporting Agency and may adversely affect her credit standing. Although this may not help your situation. I had a law professor once tell us that if you co-sign an agreement, you should expect to have to pay it, and if you don't want to or can't, don't sign.
