Legal Question in Traffic Law in South Carolina

83 in a 65mph zone

I was recently sited for speeding in a 65mph zone. The trooper said he clocked me at 83mph (which I find hard to believe, but oh well). I have been summoned to court and tropper said I must appear even though it is 3 hours away from where I live. What are my options and projected fines (outcomes, insurance points, et.c). My last speeding ticket was in 2002 and have a clean driving recorrd since then.

Re: 83 in a 65mph zone

You have a 4 point violation. SC has three different speeding tickets. 0-10 over is a 2 point, 10-25 over is a 4 point, and in excess of 25 over is a 6 point. It is the policy of the courts to reduce a 6 point to a 4 point, and reduce a 4 point to a 2 point, if the driver shows up to court. They are not required to reduce these, but they do so 99% of the time. When they reduce the points, they also will reduce the fine. You second option is to have a trial. However, these are difficult to win. If you can't make it to your court date or would rather not deal with it, you can have an attorney do it for you. My office handles tickets in Horry and Georgetown Counties and I usually charge $250.00 to take care of a speeding ticket. Some lawyers may charge more and some may charge less.
