Legal Question in Consumer Law in South Dakota

hotel deposit

Hotel stated deposit non-refundable, however they did not state how much the deposit was, I assumed it is one night stay as that is what they requested to hold the room. I sent the one night plus extra to put towards the balance, however had to cancel my reservation several months prior to the arrival date, now they are refusing to give me back my whole amount, can they do this? The Motel is in South Dakota.

I think there is some obligation to let you know how much is non-refundable. Contact the hotel's general manager and see if you can reach a resolution.

This is a matter of South Dakota law. I would suggest that you bring this matter to the attention of that state's attorney general, as it sounds like petty thievery to me. However, you seemed to have signed a contract allowing SOME petty thievery, so it becomes a consumer matter.
