Collecting for Services Rendered
After sending a regular invoice and a past-due invoice including interest and late fee charges and making numerous phone calls that were not answered or returned, I assumed the owner was not going to pay me for the $2400 basketball hoop I installed on his driveway. To get his attention, after knocking on his door to see if he or his wife was home (no answer), I removed the rim from the hoop so the family would not be able to use the basketball hoop until I had been paid in full. The irate owner now claims that what I did was illegal and is threatening to file a police report. Is this correct and what should be done about it?

Re: Collecting for Services Rendered
The owner is correct. You should immediately restore their property and then sue for the amount due. You may wish to have an attorney do a demand letter first. I would charge for that.
