a old roommate left personal property in april 2007. i tryed to call, but he never answered. then in december 2007 i got rid of it. january 2008 he had wanted it back. can i get in any trouble for getting rid of it.

You can be in trouble, you should have had handed over the property to the police authorities, instead of getting rid of it.
But you have fare amount of defences available. At the most you might be required to compensate him with the value of money.
Further, if any action is taken against you then you should file counter suit under torts against the person, for forgetting his personal property, which is his mistake, and putting you to trouble.
