Legal Question in International Law in Spain

Spansh Juridiction on UK resident

I have changed my lawyer in Spain dealing with recovering deposits from property developer and now the old lawyers are threatening to get the fees from me via court unless I pay in next 10 days.

Can a lawyer in Spain start litigation on UK resident for fees? The lawyers were very unproffesional and did not take action against a property developer for refund of my deposits for a year despite my instruction.

I do not have any property in Spain but am currently in the process of cancelling contract of an off-plan property.

I have been told that as long as I do not have porperty in Spain than I should just ignore this demand from ex-lawyer and I have nothing to worry about. Is this correct?

Will any litigation against me cause problems in future - if I were to buy again in Spain?

Re: Spansh Juridiction on UK resident

You are going rather far afield in seeking advice of American lawyers regarding a UK/EU legal issue. The short answer is that, within the EU countries, the Brussels/Lugano Conventions provide for recognition and enforcement of judgments within those states-parties. You should consult with your new Spanish lawyers regarding defense of the action in Spain, and you can verify with your UK lawyers the enforceability of Spanish judgments in the UK. I can provide you with referrals to lawyers in UK and/or Spain if you need them.

Best wishes,
