filing for bankruptcy individually when married
can one file for bankruptcy individually when married, if the debts were incurred prior to marriage? If no, how would that affect the spouse?

Yes, you can definitely file separately in chapter 7 or chapter 13. In a chapter 7 case your spouse will not be effected. In a chapter 13 in some cases, your spouse's income may be viewed as extra income that you could potentially pay back to creditors.
