Legal Question in Business Law in Tennessee

What happened when I was fired.

I was fired from my job in September. I worked at old navy and one day I went into ANOTHER old navy to see a friend and I found an American Eagle bag that another customer had left and I took it, and got fired because of that mistake. When I was fired my manager and the LP manager told me that I could not tell anyone why I was fired or 'other actions will be taken againist me'. They also said that THEY wouldn't tell anyone and that only us 3 would know and that everything that happened was going to be kept 'confidential'. I have recently found out that they both have told people, who have told other people, so on and so forth. So here's my QUESTION... Does that break some type of confidentiality law or rule or anything?

Re: What happened when I was fired.

Probably not, but it depends on exactly what is being said and the circumstances of the confidentiality. The employer can't tell lies about you that cause you to suffer some sort of loss since that is defamation. Additionally, if there was some sort of formal agreement, that cannot be broken. Otherwise, your employer is largely free to say anything that is not knowing false.
