Legal Question in Business Law in Tennessee
Non-compete Employment Agreements
I signed a non-compete agreement for the company I work for. It is quoted as being binding under Tennesee law. I live in Utah. It states that I cannot use what I have learned from them to compete in the same field. However, they have taught me nothing. I had prior experience before coming to work for them. I'd like to open my own business. Is there anything that I can do. The agreement is in effect for 18 mos. after termination. I will not takee any of their customers with me. Nor will I solicit their customers. What can I do?

Re: Non-compete Employment Agreements
Eighteen months on the non-competition clause
may not be unreasonable. However, the geographic
restriction may be unreasonable if the former
employer is in Tennessee and you are now in Utah.
