Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Tennessee
Child's last name and guardianship
I would like to use the last name of my partner of 7 years when our child is born. What laws does TN have covering the matter since they do not accept civil unions or how can I go about legally doing this? I also want to ensure my child be raised by my partner instead of facing a custody battle with my family in the event of my death, what measures do I need to take legally?

Re: Child's last name and guardianship
You need to check with local counsel to get this right. The child's interests are always going to be front center,--or should be in a custody battle between the partner and the family. You might explore adoption, but you really need to get expert, local advice on this.
