Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Tennessee

My inlaws say we owe them money

In June 1998 my inlaws bought and gave my husband and I almost 3 acres of land. They had an attorney draw up the deed and we had it registered at the court house. The deed says the land is in the free and clear for us to do with as we please. We have paid all taxes on that land. We also have witnesses that were told by my inlaws that the land was a gift. In February 2001 my husband had a verbal agreement with his dad to purchase a truck from him for $4000. The deed was signed over to us. After paying $2000 on the truck, his dad said on two different occasions not to worry about the rest to consider it paid in full. September 2002 my father in law had an accident which caused a brain injury. Now, all these years later his wife says we agreed to pay $6000 for the truck and that we haven't paid any on it. In addition, she says that we asked them to buy the land for us and we have not paid any on it. She is trying to sue us for $13,500. We have copies of all deeds and there was never a written contract for the truck nor the land since it truly was a gift. We have in the past bought a car from them and paid it off with intrest so why wouldn't we pay now if we owed anything? Does she even have a case?

Re: My inlaws say we owe them money

Your defense of her demand for money will depend upon what the documents say. You should be fine. If she follows up her demand with hiring an attorney or she takes you to court on your own, you should have an attorney review this situation for you and give you legal advice. Do not try to handle this yourself, because if could end badly. Please give me a call if you have any further questions.
