Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Tennessee

two party checks

A water leak caused damaged to flooring which was covered by my insurance. The insurance company wrote a two party check to myself and the business contracted to repair the floor. The check was mailed to the business who then gave the check to me. I went to the bank to cash it, and the owner did not sign the check. He instructed me to sign my name and his on the check, cash it, so they could begin work immediately. Is signing the two party check considered a check forgery (fraud) crime?

Re: two party checks

Go back to the owner and have him sign his name, or give you a notarized power of attorney to sign on his behalf. For a little hassle, you can save yourself a lot of grief. There is absolutely no way you could protect yourself if he then claimed that he didn't give you permission.
