Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee
Collection company harrassment
I purchased a security system in 1994 in TN and signed a contract saying I would pay $30 a month for 4 years, at which time I would own the system. I sold the house 3 years later and did not pay the balance (unknowingly). I was contacted in January 2006 (9 years after selling the house), now living in MN, by a collection company saying I owed $1,195 to the collection company for the security system. I researched it and found that it was past the statute of limitations. They placed a collection on my credit report with Experian, which after disputing it was deleted because it was too old. They continue to call me and send letters asking for payment, and have offered to reduce it by 50%. What recourse do I have to get them to stop harrassing me, or do I just ignore it since they failed in causing problems with my credit report ?

Make a requiest in writing for them to discontinue all contact. Retain a copy for your records. Under the Fair Debt Collections Practice Act, all communication must cease.
