Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee

Credit Collector

I have been sent a letter by a collection agency about a debt from 1990. I am unaware of any unpaid bills and for 17 years it has not shown on any credit reports. I have never been contacted about this debt before this letter. Is there a time limit on the collection of a debt? How can I get more information from the collection agency to verify the legitamacy of this debt? Please advise steps of action.

Re: Credit Collector

It seems that this debt is well outside of any time period you could be using. For instance, the debt can only show up on your credit report if it was made within the last 7 years. Also, the statute of limitations for breach of contract is well past. I would ignore the letter. It may be a scam or possibly a legitimate collection agency trying to see how much money they can collect on a debt they no longer have any way to enforce.
