"Charging off" a debt is a legal accounting practice used by creditors to clear their books of old debts. It does not mean that the debt is forgiven or that the debtor can forget about the obligation. The obligation still exists with the creditor being allowed to pursue collection of the debt if it so desires, including the assignment, sale or transfer of the debt to a third party for collection activity.
