Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee

My sister ran up HUGE cc bill mom know's nothing about!

A ''law firm/collection agency'' out of Knoxville, called my Mom and told her she owed $ 20,000 on a GM MC. Mom had a GM card 15 years ago, but my thought are my sister got ahold of it and went crazy. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Of course, my parent won't prosecute their own daughter. My mom about stroked when the lady called and said she owed this bill. It is mom's name alone, she draws $ 379.00 social security, has no assets, not even a car, their house is even mortgaged through that Reverse Mortgage for Senior Citizens. How will they try and get money from her? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The credit card co. will have to sue, and she can defend on the basis that she did not know of or authorize the charges (assuming she did not authorize an additional card for your sister or otherwise act so as to authorize it). If she loses and judgment is entered, they will still have to collect. Her social security is not subject to attachment. As for the house, it may be able to be taken, depending on whether there is any equity left after the reverse mortgage. She should see a lawyer promptly.
