Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee
Stop payment on check
My boyfriend asked me last January to move in with him. He stated that he knew it would be expensive for me to make the move and offered to pay the rent on my apartment. I made the move in February and sold or gave away all my belongings except my clothes, cosmetics and a couple of prints. I used the money from the sale of my items to continue to pay my bills and the balance of the rent I owed. I broke up with him two weeks ago because I learned he was seeing other women. He gave me a check for $2,000.00 and asked me to take it. He said he felt bad because things didn't work out and he knew it had cost me a lot to move in with him. I opened a checking account with the check and waited for the funds to be released before paying some bills and buying groceries with it. I have just received a notice from the bank that the payment on the check has been stopped and they want their money back. I don't have any money - I am looking for a job now. They had verified funds and made me wait until the check cleared before allowing me access to those funds. How can they come back to me for those funds. Can I sue him for writing a worthless check? Help?

I would take him to small claims court (in TN, it is called general sessions). Go down to the courthouse in your county and you will need to fill out a form and pay the filing fee. They will set you up with a court date where you can tell your story to the judge and possibly get a judgment against your ex.
