sued for charged off credit card

I received a phone call last night from a legal firm in CA. They said I must pay by tomorrow a the balance on a credit card that I have a letter in hand from the creditor saying was charged off. If I don't pay the amount in full by tomorrow morning they will sue and add an additional $4,600.00 to the debt. Is this legal? We had to leave our home some months ago due to toxic mold. And after being led on by our landlord for six months he finally evicted us and impounded all our belongings. My wife is in a wheelchair from the toxic mold and I have developed medical complications due to the mold. Any legal suggestions concerning this unexpected debt?

They will have to serve you with a lawsuit to enforce this debt. Then, they will have to get a judgment. The next step is for them to attach that judgment to something you own, like a house, or to your wages.
