our twenty-five year-old son owes us some money. He just got a large check and blew it on electronics. We have the stash locked up. may we sell it for compensation?

You cannot sell the equipment unless he consents to you doing so or he gave you a written security interest in the equipment making you a secured creditor which in essence, would allow you to "repossess" the electronics. If you try to sell his equipment without his consent or having a security interest in the property, you will possibly be facing both civil and criminal charges.
