Your only obligation, in Tennessee, to pay for someone else's credit card bill is if you are also named on the account as an "owner" of the account, you have signed a document saying you would be responsble for the account, or a court has ordered you to pay the bill as the result of a divorce decree, etc. Unless you have been ordered by a court to pay the bill or unless you have personally obligated yourself to pay the bill, you can reject all collection efforts. If the bill is being handled by an outside third party collector such as a collection agency or lawyer, and you have no legal liability for the credit card charges, the collector/lawyer may be in violation of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
