Legal Question in Criminal Law in Tennessee

I got a call from a detective. He accused me of identity theft. He called me on my cellphone he said someone has stole a person identity and tried to get a loan. They used my cell phone number and my job as reference.. I asked him did he want me to come in, he said not if I wasn't going to admit it. He would call me when he got more evidence so shall I hire a lawyer just in case?

You should at least talk to a lawyer, and with the assistance of an attorney you should immediately begin to preserve all evidence about your cell phone and any identifying information that the perpetrator may have used. For example, bank video records are often erased or recorded over within a few months of a transaction. If the video of the day and time the perpetrator opened the account/applied for a loan are not secured, they can disappear even before you are sued/charged with any crime.

In short, while it isn't your fault that you are the victim of a crime, you can help early in the process to make sure that you are not charged and you can keep your credit history as clean as possible. You cannot assume that a detective will be as diligent as you will be in establishing that you are a victim and not the perpetrator.
