If you are retaining an attorney: you can request time to contact that attorney. If you are requesting an attorney based on an inability to pay: if there is no conflict-you will be assigned an attorney with the public defender's office. If you have conflicted out: the court can appoint an attorney but you don't have much of a choice-you could ask for an attorney that represented you previously but there is no guarantee if you are not hiring the attorney yourself.
