Legal Question in Criminal Law in Tennessee

drug/weapon charge

MY son was stopped for speeding through a construction zone. When the police asked him if he had anything in the car he said he had pot and maybe a gun. The police searched his car and found both the pot and the gun. When asked why he had a gun (purchased illegally, as he is under 21), he said that he and his friends sometimes shoot at cans. He has no criminal record, and cooperated fully with the police. He was released from jail without a bond, but needs to go to court in three weeks. How much trouble can he be in, and how much is he most likely in? What should we do? Thank you for your help.

Re: drug/weapon charge

It can vary by county. I recommend you hire an attorney. An attorney can usually negotiate with the DA to receive a lighter conviction / sentence.
