Legal Question in Criminal Law in Tennessee

internet / telephone harassment

I've done something really stupid....I live in one state and this person in another. she used to be engaged to my boyffriend. I've always felt threatened by her because she tried to break us up at one point. So, I've been going into sex chat rooms, pretending to be her, and posting her phone number to men that wanted phone sex. Well one that called, got back on the sex room and said this person knew who I was and was reporting me to the police. I did NOT make any calls, just posted her number......can I get in trouble? Im scared.

Re: internet / telephone harassment

It's possible you might be prosecuted.... but not likely. One reason is that it would be next to impossible to prove that you were the one who did anything, and further difficult to establish what state you were in when you did anything.

Tennessee can't punish you for something you did in Georgia (or Arkansas or Kentucky, etc), and vice-versa.

You face a far worse situation in civil court, where you might be sued for what you did, and it may not matter where you were when you did it, and it will not be required to prove things "beyond a reasonable doubt."

If you have any more questions, give me a call.
