Legal Question in Criminal Law in Tennessee

I was recently pulled over by some officers who had a warrant for my arrest for possession. After asking my name and if I have any other addresses, they asked "do you understand your miranda rights". They never read them to me, just asked if I understood. is this still legal?

The requirement is that they must advise you of your rights, ask you if you understand them, then ask if you waive them. If you do understand them, and state that you waive them, then anything you say can be used against you. If you are not advised of your rights, do not understand them, or do not waive them, then nothing you say while in police custody and in response to police questioning can be used against you.
