Can I, and how would I go about, seeking special permission for my son to be released for one day of a jail term to attend an important family event.

The only person who can ORDER his release is the judge who sentenced him. Check with his lawyer who represented him at the court hearing that resulted in putting him in jail.

Some jailers may have a policy or program for furloughs for humanitarian purposes, but those are rare. Still, a call or visit to the sheriff in your county can't hurt.

I have has inmates released for one day to attend a funeral, but it is rare. A big question is whether or not the inmate is a violent offender and would have to be escorted by a deputy; or a non-violent offender whocan be trusted to safely leave the jail, attend the event, and promptly return on his own.
