Legal Question in Criminal Law in Tennessee

theft under 500

I went to the grocery store. My mistake was, with my grocery bag, i pick someone else bag which contains cheked out dvds from video rental. when I found that I was thinking to return that but at christmas time I was busy too. Those missed dvds were checked out by one of the local police officers wife, so he went to grocery store and watch video, came to my house and inform me that your are charged for ''theft under 500'' and we caught you on video. I know that I didnt mean to do that.

This is my first experiment with police and court. I have trial date within 20 days. Can I defend my self? what can happend in this case? Please help.

You have a constitutional right to represent yourself in court; however, it would be a big mistake. You need a lawyer to represent you. If you can not afford a lawyer, if you are indigent, the court must appoint a lawyer to represent you.

IN Tennessee, you are charged with a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to 11 months and 29 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.00.
