back child support

I have a court-ordered child support from 1980 in tennessee that my ex-was suppose to pay on and hasnt untill late 1999 when DHS located him--as i was on families first at one time--DHS said they can only go back 6-7 years in tenn. to collect-i found out in other states you can go back 20 years--even though my daughter is an adult now arent i entitled to support from years ago or can i collect if i move to the state where the limitations are longer?My ex- lives in mississippi--i dont think it is fair that he only pays for 6-7 yrs. when i supported her almost all her life.

The law of Tennessee is going to be the law which will determine the statute of limitations, and the only way you could pursue the matter in another state is if the father was there at the time. All of that said I believe the advice you got on Tennessee's statute of limitations was wrong. I suggest that you contact attorneys Ron Landers or Autry Jones in Chattanooga. They used to work together in child support enforcement and now work together in private practice. I am certain either could give you a definite answer regarding the statute of limitations and.
