Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Back child support

My oldest child was adopted by her stepfather in 1985. This was done without my knowledge. At the time I owed some back child support. My ex-wife is now trying to collect the back child support through another state. I have been told the statue of limitations for collecting child support in this state is 10 years. My question is would the time start running when the adoption occured and my obligation ended, or from the time the child reaches legal age?

Re: Back child support

Good questions... and not ones that come up every day, even for someone doing a lot of domestic relations work.

My advice is that you retain an attorney to represent you on the matter as soon as any action is filed to pursue the back child support, don't worry about it until then, and once you have retained a lawyer for the case you will be paying him to come up with an authoritative answer.

I don't have one and really wouldn't hazard a guess.
