Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee
name change
i 2001 i was ''married'' to a man in
santa barbara, ca. i lived in tn so
after the marriage i can home with
my temporary marriage cert and a
few months later decided to use it to
change my name to my husbands.
the social security office had no
problem changing my name with the
document but the drivers licence
people said they would not honor it.
well me and this man split up and
now im stuck with two names. after
some digging into trying to get the
problem resolved i come to find out
that the marriage that was
performed was not legal and the
document (which has been
misplaced over time) must have
been a fraud. in fact the whole thing
was a fraud. and now i cant get a
replacement social security card
because my id still has my maiden
name on it, so i dont have one. ive
been living my life though my
maiden name even though its not
my legal name. ive met a man that i
would like to really marry. i am
actually pregnant with his child and
would like to marry him before the
baby is born but im stuck in identity
limbo. what course of action do i
need to take to get this resolved so i
can live normally ever after.

Re: name change
I would check with California to see if your marriage was legal (they should have a record if it was). If you were never married, you should be able to marry the man that you want to, and in the process get your name legally changed to his last name.
If your marriage was legal, you will need to get a divorce and in that process you can get your name changed back to your maiden name.
