Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Can a child have 2 last names?

The father of my son was not present from the 4th month on and wasn't there during delivery. He did not attempt to contact during this time until I rec'd a letter from his attorney regarding him wanting to pay child support. We together worked this out but now he has called and wants his last name on the birth certificate (my son currently has mine)..can he force me to do this and if so can my son have a hyphenated last name or both of our last names?

Re: Can a child have 2 last names?

You have not stated how old your child is and thus, I do not know how long he has had that name. However, I think you will find that a judge will place the burden on him to show why the name needs to be changed. Contact an attorney to research that issue for you.
