Child support

The mother of my child has not contacted me for 20 years and now she wants back child support. He is 23 years old now. Does she have a right to support now?

Re: Child support

Unfortunately for you, Tennessee does not impose a statute of limitations on the collection of child support debt. This may be the only debt that does not have a period defining when the action is extinguished by the passage of time.

Statute of Limitations to enforce a child support order.

Judgment for child support payments for each child subject to the order for child support pursuant to this part shall be enforceable without limitation as to time. The law is not retroactive. (TCA Section 36-2-321)

Did the mother just obtain a child support order this year, or did she have one from years ago when she was raising the minor child?
