Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

contempt of court

I filed a petition for contempt of court against the father of my children. He has not allowed me to see them in six years. Every time I locate them, he moves. But this time I found him,I filed the petition. I do not have the money to hire an attorney, but the court appointed him one. Do I have to have an attorney? If I don't have an attorney, what can I do to prepare for the hearing. What is going to happen in the court room?

Re: contempt of court

You do not have to have an attorney though one is generally helpful. You may be able to get one through the legal aid groups - call the court and ask for the name/number of the local bar association. With respect to going to court, you will have the opportunity to tell your side of the story and ask questions - you would need to prove that you have been trying to find your child and that the father has avoided contact with you. Good luck
