Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Custody of step-children

My husband is an over the road truck driver. He has custody of his two children ages 15 and 16. We have been married for 13 years and in those 13 years their biological mother has not seen them or tried to contact them, that we are aware of. Her whereabouts are unknown. At the time we did not think it necessary to go through the adoption process because the children were so young and my husbands job was not that risky. But as we have grown older we now see things in a different light. My question is: If something was to happen to my husband, heaven forbid, what would he need to do now to see to it that I, the childrens step-mother, would get custody and control of the minor children? We have a very strained relationship with his parents, would there be any way they could over-ride my husbands wishes? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!
