if you get your divorce papers in jail do you have to go to court for it to be final?

Not necessarily. ONE of you will have to go to court to make it final, but your spouse could do that without you appearing. Of course it you don't appear at the time of the hearing and you don't enter into a Marital Dissolution Agreement you are going to have no input into the terms of the divorce.
