Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Foreign Decree of Divorce?

I was divorce in 1995. The divorce was in Lucas County (Ohio). On 1-14-00 I received a notice from Chancery Court (Tennessee) where my ex wife lives saying hat a petition was filed on 26th day of April, 1999 requesting enrollment of a Foreign Decree of Divorce??? What is this? And that it was heard by judge on 11-19-99? I was never notified of anything? Not to appear or that there was a petition. It also says that enrollment of Foreign Decree of Divorce shall be taxed to me? What is this?

Re: Foreign Decree of Divorce?

You are talking about a process called registering and domesticating a foriegn (from another state) decree.

After it is domesticated in a new state, the new state can enforce and modify it.

I would be that you have children and that she wants to either modify the issues of custody/visitation, or wants to make sure that if YOU ever want to modify them, you have to go to where she is living to do so.
