in the state of tennessee how hard is it for the mother separated in a gay relationship to get custody of the children

The court will make a decision based on the best interest of the children. Sexual orientation likely will be a very small factor in that decision. Far more important will be all of the myriad factors which are involved in parenting. At the same time it will depend somewhat on the judge involved. If you get one who is strongly biased, you may have a problem.
