Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee
Grandparents suing for custody
My stepdaughter's paternal grandparents (father deceased for over ten years) bought her a plane ticket from one state to another and assisted her in running away from home. The GPs were called immediately after she ran away but did not inform us they had bought her a ticket. They finally informed us 24 hours later that she was there. CPS was called and she was returned within 3 days at our expense. Now the grandparents are suing for custody claiming maternal abuse. The daughter is unhappy as of late, mostly due to restrictions which seem reasonable and constant grounding due to continued rules violations, school troubles etc; She recently stated that she wants to leave because she can't do what she wants. When we have let her visit the out of state GPs every year for several weeks during summer vaction she comes back brainwashed because she is spoiled and has been given free roam to do what she pleases. They basically let her ''get away with murder.'' Questions: Do they have rights? They filed in another state, what state will it be decided in? How much will her desire to be with the GPs count? Any other advice greatly appreciated?

Re: Grandparents suing for custody
Grandparents do have rights in TN under certain situations. However, it sounds like they are suing in the wrong state. If your child has lived in TN for the past 6 months, the general rule is that the case must be brought here.
