Legal separation vs filing for divorce immediately

My sister is in process of leaving abusive relationship. Husband has total control of all assets. They have one minor child together-4 years old. Does she need a legal separation or can she file for divorce right away. What does a legal separation offer than filing for divorce would not. She will be moving in with my family until she can get on her feet. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

There is no waiting period to file for divorce as long as Tennessee is the home state for the child.
