Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Paternity and Child Support - Mother 15/Father 16 - Ten Years Old

I recently received a notice for paternity and child support. I gist of the notice is that I am the alleged father of a child born in September 1988 in the state of NH. At the time of the childs birth I was 16, the mother was 15; conception 15/14. Now some ten years later the mother decides that the time is right to do something about this. All the attorneys with whom I've spoken said that I should have asserted my right in 1988; but at the time I didn't know and even more, how is a 16 year old going to know how the American legal system works? Even at the age of 25 I don't know. I could be garnished up to 65% of my current earnings. Doesn't this seem wrong? Would it seem right that the parents of the child that decide that its okay for their child to give birth to a child would have some responsibility to that child? Lets say my 14 year old daughter was two months pregnant and I knew it and I decided that she should carry the child to term. As the childs parent I must be in some way responsible for the child upon birth. Willing to pay an attoney who can help.

So long as you are in Tennessee, you are NOT going to have 65% of your earnings garnished. But it appears you have not yet been determined to be the father, and you don't mention how it is that New Hampshire got jurisdiction of the case. Many of your questions are of the strictly rhetorical variety (sort of like asking "Why do I have such bad luck" or "Does this sound fair to you?"If you want to discuss the law involved and your prospects for defending the case or deciding what you should do next, please feel free to contact me at the number or e-mail address below.
