How offen should you have to update your leave through your doctor? Is it up to your employer to set guidelines on how offen you should sumit another FMLA for a cronick illiness?

It really depends on the type of condition you have, the opinion given by your doctor at the outset for how long the condition will require leave, and how much time has passed. Your employer can expect to get reasonable periodic updates if your recovery is open ended. If on the other hand your doctor gave a definite timetable for recovery and nothing has happened to make that timetable suspect it is probably not reasonable for your employer to receive any updates.
