Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Tennessee
I am a 14 year old who is writing a short story/book. (im just testing my writing skills). I want to use song lyrics from different bands in the book. Do I need copyright permission to do that?

As a Franchise Attorney I can say the following. Whenever a copyrighted work is used (song lyrics in your case), permission from the copyright owner is necessary. There is what's called a "fair use" defense that can be asserted if someone gets sued for copyright infringement. This defense allows limited use of small portions of copyrighted material without acquiring permission for things like commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. Consult with a good copyright or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice on fair use before doing anything.
